Mercedes-Benz of Richmond in the Thalhimer Club Challenge 22

Mercedes-Benz of Richmond congratulates Westwood Club for winning the 2022 Thalhimer Club Challenge on September 25. The event is Richmond’s largest tennis competition of the year.

Mercedes-Benz of Richmond has sponsored Club Challenge for the past six years and is a proud, major supporter of tennis in the Richmond region in partnership with the Richmond Tennis Association. The RTA is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that operates various tennis programs and events for tennis players of all ages and abilities.

Twelve of Richmond’s largest tennis clubs battled it out across the three-day weekend, with clubs fielding 22 doubles teams each day with players ranging from amateurs to former Division I college players. The event was hosted by Westwood Club and Salisbury Country Club and marked the 29th time it has been held.

“Thalhimer Club Challenge is the most anticipated tennis event on the calendar and represents the largest fundraiser for junior tennis programs here in RVA,” noted Travis Miller, RTA’s president, “it’s truly a one-of-a-kind event that brings together the Richmond tennis community in competition and camaraderie. Congratulations to Westwood for bringing home the coveted trophy.”

The Rising Stars program is one of the programs that benefits from the Thalhimer Club Challenge. The program provides underserved area youth with free tennis clinics and training at Byrd Park in Richmond. Players at this year’s Club Challenge had the opportunity to donate their extra tennis racquets to area youth.

Over 500 players and hundreds of fans came out to play and cheer at this year’s event. Each club team was comprised of various USTA-rated levels that contributed equally to their team score. After the first two days of play, the top six clubs battled it out at Salisbury and concluded indoors at Westwood due to afternoon rain.

Westwood last raised the trophy in 2008 and played exceptional tennis throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the club teams, players, sponsors, and volunteers for making the 2022 Thalhimer Club Challenge another successful and fun event!
