Mercedes-Benz Battery Replacement: 12V Warning Messages, Signs and What Drives the Cost

Mercedes-Benz Battery Replacement: 12V Warning Messages, Signs and What Drives the Cost
Mercedes-Benz battery replacement usually starts with a 12V display message or a car that will not start. Here is what the four 12V messages in the Operator’s Manual mean and what to do first. We also cover 48V and electric models and what drives the cost.
- No replacement age or mileage is listed. The Operator’s Manuals we checked list none for the 12V battery. Display messages and charging notes tell you when to act.
- Four 12V messages, two stop orders. Two messages tell you to stop the vehicle. One asks you to drive or charge the battery. One sends you to a workshop.
- Some batteries are workshop-only. 48V battery work, and all 12V battery work on the EQE SUV, belongs at a qualified specialist workshop.
- Cost depends on your car. Battery type, powertrain, added diagnosis and warranty position shape the bill. Ask our advisors for a quote on your vehicle.
When does a Mercedes-Benz need a battery replacement?
Mercedes-Benz battery replacement follows the battery’s condition. The Operator’s Manuals we checked list no replacement age or mileage for the 12V battery. Instead, the manuals give you display messages and charging notes. Mercedes-Benz recommends having the 12 V battery replaced at a qualified specialist workshop, such as a Mercedes-Benz Service Center. Before you replace anything, ask the advisors at our Mercedes-Benz service center in Richmond to check the battery and the charging system.
This guide uses the 2024 and 2025 North American Operator’s Manuals for the C-Class, E-Class, GLC, GLE and EQE SUV. Wording can change by model and year, so check the Battery section of your own manual too.
What do the 12V battery messages on a Mercedes-Benz mean?
Four 12V messages appear in the manuals we checked. Two tell you to stop the vehicle; two deal with charging or service. Each message comes with a cause and an instruction in the Operator’s Manual. The table quotes them as written. Your display may also show a battery symbol next to the text.
| Display message | Cause the manual gives | What the manual tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| “12 V On-board Electrical System Service Required” | “The 12 V on-board electrical system is malfunctioning.” | “Consult a qualified specialist workshop immediately.” |
| “Stop Vehicle See Operator’s Manual” (battery symbol) | “The 12 V battery is no longer being charged and the state of charge is too low.” | “Stop the vehicle immediately in accordance with the traffic conditions. Do not continue driving.” Switch off the vehicle and consult a qualified specialist workshop. |
| “Switch on vehicle to charge the 12 V battery” | “The vehicle is off and the state of charge of the 12 V battery is too low.” | Switch off electrical consumers that are not required. “Drive for 30–60 mins.” Or charge the 12 V battery when stationary. Plug-in hybrids: charge at a charging station. EQE SUV: charge the vehicle at a charging station. |
| “Stop Vehicle To Charge the 12 V Battery Do Not Switch Off Vehicle” | “The state of charge of the 12 V battery is too low.” | “Stop the vehicle immediately in accordance with the traffic conditions. Do not continue driving.” “Leave the vehicle running.” “If the display message disappears: drive on.” “If the display message does not disappear: consult a qualified specialist workshop.” |
Source: Mercedes-Benz Operator’s Manuals, Battery display messages: MY2025 GLC (pp. 540-541), MY2025 GLE (pp. 535-536), MY2025 EQE SUV (pp. 529-530), MY2024 C-Class and E-Class. Reviewed 10/14/2026. EQE SUV wording differs in places.
The second message carries a strong note in the GLC and GLE manuals: “Possible engine damage if you continue driving.” The EQE SUV manual warns of possible damage to the drive system instead. On 48V models, the same “Stop Vehicle” title can also signal a 48V fault, so the battery symbol matters.

What should you do when a battery message appears?
Read the full message, follow its instruction, and book a check before the battery runs flat again. These steps follow the manual’s instructions for the four 12V messages above.
- Read the exact wording. A stop message and a charging message ask for different actions. Note the text, or take a photo when it is safe to do so.
- Stop safely if the message says stop. For both stop messages, the manual says: “Stop the vehicle immediately in accordance with the traffic conditions. Do not continue driving.” For the “Do Not Switch Off Vehicle” message, it adds: “Leave the vehicle running.”
- Cut the electrical load. For the low-charge message, switch off electrical consumers that are not required.
- Check for a frozen battery before any charging. If the indicator lamps do not light up at low temperatures, the manual says you “must neither charge the battery nor give the vehicle starting assistance.” “Always allow a battery to thaw before charging it or performing starting assistance.”
- Charge the way your manual describes. The GLC and GLE manuals say “Drive for 30–60 mins,” or charge the battery when stationary with an approved charger. Plug-in hybrids charge at a charging station. On the EQE SUV, the manual says: “Only have the battery charged at a qualified specialist workshop.”
- Book a check if a message stays or returns. The 12 V system fault message says to consult a qualified specialist workshop immediately. A low-charge message that does not disappear also points to a workshop. Use online service scheduling or call 804-607-7517.

If you need to drop the car off early or late, see the early-bird and night-owl drop-off page. You can also contact the service department with questions before you book.
Seeing a battery message right now?
What warning signs does Mercedes-Benz tell owners to watch for?
The manuals we checked do not list symptoms. The MY2025 GLC manual flags short trips, long parking, low-charge notices and dark warning lamps in cold weather. Other models may word these notes differently, so read them as patterns to watch, not as a diagnosis.
- Mostly short trips. The manual says the battery “may not be sufficiently charged” on short-distance trips. “This reduces the life of the battery.” It advises driving longer distances regularly.
- Parked for weeks. After more than six weeks parked, the 12 V battery “may also be impaired or damaged by heavy discharging.” A standby mode reduces energy loss, but it is not available on all models.
- A low-charge notice on your phone. If equipped, you can receive a smartphone message when the starter battery charge is low. Availability depends on equipment and active connected services. Learn more about the Mercedes-Benz app.
- Features left on. If you stay in the car with features such as seat heating running, the manual warns the battery may discharge. Starting may then need a jump start.
- Dark lamps on a cold morning. If the indicator lamps do not light up at low temperatures, the manual says the discharged battery has very likely frozen.
The manuals we checked do not list slow cranking or dim lights as signs. If something seems off, ask for a battery and charging-system check.
Is it safe to jump-start a Mercedes-Benz?
Only under the manual’s conditions. A frozen battery must never be jump-started, and the EQE SUV manual allows starting assistance only at a workshop. Read the warnings before any cables come out. The callout below quotes the GLC manual on frozen batteries.
“A discharged battery may freeze at temperatures slightly above or below freezing point.” “If the indicator/warning lamps in the instrument cluster do not light up at low temperatures, it is very likely that the discharged battery has frozen. In this case you must neither charge the battery nor give the vehicle starting assistance.” “Always allow a battery to thaw before charging it or performing starting assistance.” Source: MY2025 GLC Operator’s Manual, pp. 410-411.
The same section sets more conditions for gasoline, 48V and plug-in hybrid models:
- Connection point. Always use the jump-start connection point in the engine compartment for charging and jump starting.
- 12V only. Starting assistance may only come from vehicles, batteries or devices with a nominal voltage of 12 V. The vehicles must not touch each other.
- Gasoline engines. Jump-start only when the engine and exhaust system are cold. Avoid numerous and extended attempts to start the engine.
- Chargers. Use only chargers with a maximum charging voltage of 14.8 V that are tested and approved for Mercedes-Benz.
- Gas and acid. Explosive gases can escape during charging and jump starting. Avoid flames, smoking and sparks, ventilate the area and do not stand over the battery. “Battery acid is caustic.”
The manual adds: “Starting assistance is not considered to be a normal operating condition.” A defrosted battery’s service life “may be drastically shortened,” and Mercedes-Benz recommends having it checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance can jump-start a dead battery, though MBUSA notes this is not applicable for EV vehicles. Eligibility details are in the FAQ below.
What battery does a Mercedes-Benz use, and can you replace it yourself?
The MY2025 GLC and GLE manuals say the 12V battery is AGM or lithium-ion. Mercedes-Benz recommends workshop replacement with an approved battery. Those manuals state: “Full vehicle functionality is only guaranteed with an AGM battery or lithium-ion battery.” For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recommends only batteries tested and approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz.
Those manuals do describe owner replacement, with conditions. The new battery must meet “the specific vehicle requirements.” The vent hose must stay connected “to the original opening on the side of the battery.” If the 12V battery has to be disconnected, the manuals say to contact a qualified specialist workshop. They warn that incorrect work can restrict functions relevant for safety systems.
Old batteries need proper handling too. The manual says it is illegal to dispose of them with household trash. Take them to a qualified specialist workshop or a used-battery collection point. The warranty booklet recommends Genuine Mercedes-Benz parts but does not require them. You can also order parts online.
How do 48V, plug-in hybrid and electric models handle battery work?
Their extra batteries change the rules. 48V battery work, and all 12V battery work on the EQE SUV, belongs at a qualified specialist workshop. 48V mild-hybrid models carry a separate 48V battery. The GLC manual says: “Do not perform any work on the battery.” Its 48V messages differ too. “48 V Battery See Operator’s Manual” means comfort functions such as the air conditioning may be limited, and you can drive on. “If the display message remains active permanently, consult a qualified specialist workshop immediately.”
One 48V message is urgent: “Battery Overheated Stop! Everyone Get Out! Outdoors if Possible.” The manual says: “The 48 V battery is overheating. There is a risk of fire.” “If smoke is present, leave the danger zone and call the fire service immediately.” “Consult a qualified specialist workshop even if there are no external signs of a fire.”
On plug-in hybrid models, the GLC manual says not to disconnect the 12V battery, even during long idle periods. Otherwise the high-voltage battery cannot be monitored. After a jump start, the electric drive may be unavailable for approximately 30 minutes.
For Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles, the EQE SUV manual says to have the 12V battery jump-started, charged and replaced only at a qualified specialist workshop. Other electric models were not checked for this guide.

What drives the cost of a Mercedes-Benz battery replacement?
The bill depends on battery type, powertrain, any added diagnosis and your coverage. Ask our advisors for a quote on your specific vehicle. There is no single price, because the job is not the same on every Mercedes-Benz. The table shows what the manuals and the MY2026 warranty booklet say about each driver.
| Cost driver | What Mercedes-Benz says | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Battery technology | The MY2025 GLC and GLE manuals: AGM or lithium-ion; use batteries tested and approved for your vehicle | The approved battery for your model sets the part |
| Powertrain | Owner replacement is described with conditions in the GLC and GLE manuals; EQE SUV 12V work only at a qualified specialist workshop | EQE SUV 12V work and 48V battery work are workshop-only |
| 48V system | A separate 48V battery; work on it only at a qualified specialist workshop | A 48V fault is a different job from a 12V replacement |
| Charging fault | “The 12 V battery is no longer being charged” | Diagnosis may find other work, quoted separately |
| Warranty position | MY2026 passenger car booklet: New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first; normal wear and tear is not covered | Coverage is checked against your vehicle before repairs |
| Roadside Assistance | Jump starts complimentary under a Mercedes-Benz warranty; not applicable for EV vehicles | Helps when the manual allows a jump start |

The MY2026 passenger car booklet does not list the 12V battery separately. It says coverage for specific components “should always be verified with your Authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealership prior to any repairs.” Bring your VIN and service records so your advisor can check.
The FTC notes you do not have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect. But if the warranty says the work will be done for free, the dealer or manufacturer can make you use repair facilities it chooses.
Mercedes-Benz Prepaid Maintenance plans can be customized, so check your plan contract for battery items. As posted on 10/14/2026, our service offers page listed no battery-specific offer, and its posted offers run through 10/31/2026. Ask about service financing options if you want to spread the cost.
How should Richmond drivers plan for battery checks?
Pair a battery check with your next Service A or Service B visit, and plan ahead for Central Virginia’s winter freezes. Central Virginia has hot, humid summers and winter freezes with occasional snow and ice. That is local context, not a Mercedes-Benz service condition. NHTSA’s winter driving tips note, “When the temperature drops, so does battery power.” NHTSA suggests having a mechanic check your battery and charging system.
MBUSA’s Service A and Service B lists do not include a battery test, so ask your advisor to add one. Timing for each visit comes from your Maintenance Booklet and the ASSYST PLUS service indicator. As posted on 10/14/2026, see the Service A offer and Service B offer pages; offers and terms change.

Mercedes-Benz battery questions, answered
Short answers to common questions about 12V and 48V batteries in a Mercedes-Benz.
Questions about your Mercedes-Benz battery? Call our service team at 804-607-7517.
Can I keep driving when "Stop Vehicle To Charge the 12 V Battery" appears?
No. The manual says: "Stop the vehicle immediately in accordance with the traffic conditions. Do not continue driving." Leave the vehicle running so the battery can charge. If the message disappears, the manual says you can drive on. If it stays on the display, consult a qualified specialist workshop.
How long should I drive after "Switch on vehicle to charge the 12 V battery"?
The GLC and GLE manuals say to drive for 30–60 minutes, after switching off electrical consumers you do not need. Plug-in hybrids charge at a charging station. Before charging a battery when stationary, rule out a frozen battery: the manual says never to charge one. On the EQE SUV, battery charging belongs at a qualified specialist workshop.
Does Mercedes-Benz list a replacement interval for the 12V battery?
Not in the Operator’s Manuals we checked. They list no age or mileage for replacement. Instead, they warn that frequent short trips reduce battery life and that long periods of parking may damage the battery. In our view, a workshop test of the battery and charging system is the practical way to judge its condition.
Can I install any AGM battery from a parts store?
The manuals recommend batteries tested and approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz, and the replacement must meet the specific vehicle requirements. The warranty booklet says warranty obligations do not depend on a particular brand of replacement parts, though it recommends Genuine Mercedes-Benz parts. Ask our parts team which battery fits your model.
Can a Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle be jump-started at the roadside?
The EQE SUV manual says starting assistance, charging and replacement of the 12V battery should be done only at a qualified specialist workshop. MBUSA also notes that the Roadside Assistance jump start is not applicable for EV vehicles. If your electric Mercedes-Benz will not wake up, call our service team for next steps.
What is the 48V battery in my Mercedes-Benz?
Mild-hybrid models have a 48V on-board electrical system with its own battery, separate from the 12V battery. The manual says all work on it must be done at a qualified specialist workshop. The MY2026 passenger car booklet lists the 48V battery in its emission-related parts list, so ask your advisor which coverage applies.
Is my Mercedes-Benz battery covered by the warranty?
It depends on your vehicle. The MY2026 Passenger Car Service and Warranty Booklet lists a New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, for defects in material or workmanship. It does not list the 12V battery separately and excludes normal wear and tear. We did not review the EQ booklet.
What kind of charger can I use at home?
On gasoline, 48V and plug-in hybrid models, the GLC manual allows only approved chargers with a maximum charging voltage of 14.8 V. Connect them at the jump-start connection point. Never charge a battery that may be frozen. On the EQE SUV, the manual says to have the battery charged only at a qualified specialist workshop.
What should I do before parking my Mercedes-Benz for several weeks?
The GLC manual warns that parking longer than six weeks may damage the vehicle through disuse. The 12V battery may also be impaired by heavy discharging. Some models offer a standby mode that reduces energy loss. On plug-in hybrids, the manual says not to disconnect the 12V battery, so the high-voltage battery can still be monitored.
Does Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance help with a dead battery?
Yes, within its rules. MBUSA says the program can jump-start a dead battery and that soft services are complimentary for any vehicle under a Mercedes-Benz warranty. The jump start is not applicable for EV vehicles. The warranty booklet notes that Roadside Assistance is a separate service from any warranties.
